Surviving Tax Season: Tips for Managing Stress and Staying Organized

jill33177

Being an accountant, January 31st is like my personal Super Bowl. Everyone suddenly remembers I exist and expects me to perform financial miracles! It's like they think I possess magical powers to make their receipts disappear... Oh wait, that’s just me throwing them in the shredder!

And let’s not forget my thrilling side gigs as the Honorary Treasurer for my local church and the Spinners and Weavers guild. Because nothing says "party time" like balancing the church budget and counting yarn donations! I swear, every year it feels like I’m juggling flaming swords while riding a unicycle on a tightrope made of spreadsheets. Who needs a circus when you've got tax season?

As a result, all my intended weaving and dyeing projects seem to vanish into the horizon, like my motivation on a Monday morning! Seriously, it’s like they’ve signed a pact with the Bermuda Triangle of crafting. I’m left feeling like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel—unless it’s the glow from my TV screen while binge-watching shows and pretending I’m a productive member of society.

Nevertheless, I was able to finish my Stephen West Shawl while relaxing in front of the TV, armed with a large glass of wine after each long day. Who knew that wine could be the secret ingredient to crafting? I mean, if I can’t weave a masterpiece, at least I can knit a cosy shawl for my couch potato lifestyle!

As the month wraps up, I'm checking off the finished accounts and tax returns, with only the church left to complete! Last week was a real rollercoaster—our broadband went down on Friday and didn't come back until Wednesday. I felt like I was living in the Stone Age! I half-expected to see a caveman outside my window trying to invent fire with two sticks. Seriously, who knew that without Wi-Fi, I would actually have to interact with my family? we even had to switch on the lights by going to the light switch rather than ask Alexa - The horror!

Yesterday, I finally wove 20 centimeters on my Jane Loom for the first time since early December! I know, I know—20 centimeters doesn’t sound like much, but in the world of weaving, that’s basically the equivalent of scaling Mount Everest while blindfolded and riding a unicycle. Who knew that yarn could be so dramatic?

It truly helped me feel more human again, which is great because my dog was starting to question my existence. I could almost hear her thoughts: “Is she ever going to leave the couch again, or should I start planning a rescue mission?”

And let me tell you, I can sense myself finally beginning to relax. The tension in my shoulders is easing, and I might even be able to lift my arms above my head without sounding like a creaky old door! So watch out world, because I’m back in action, one centimeter at a time!

Today was primarily dedicated to preparing my Surrey Artists Open Studio listing for June, which is basically my way of saying, "Look at my art, please!" I also decided to incorporate some 1-hour taster sessions into my weaving experience offerings. Because nothing says 'fun' like getting tangled in yarn while trying to make something that vaguely resembles a wall hanging! Who knew weaving could double as a cardio workout? Watch out, Pilates!

Think that's it for now!

Lots of love and happy weaving - Jill x
