Psychedelic is a completely unique handwoven silk scarf, hand dyed and woven by me in my Surrey studio.
Woven entirely in fine silk using the fascinating Corris-effect technique, the intricate weave creates an almost fluid pattern across the cloth. Rich shades of deep blue and teal mingle with pinks, violets and warm coral tones, continually shifting as the scarf moves and catches the light.
The weave design is closely based on work published by Margaret Coe and Amy Norris, who developed the Corris-effect technique. I have interpreted their design through my own choice of colours and individually hand-dyed silk yarns to create Psychedelic.
The natural lustre of the silk adds another dimension, giving the colours wonderful depth and a subtle iridescence that is difficult to capture fully in photographs.
Every stage of the scarf itself has been completed by hand — from selecting and individually dyeing the silk yarns, through preparing and threading the loom, to weaving, hemstitching and finally hand-twisting each of the fringes.
The result is a beautifully soft and fluid scarf with an elegant drape, generously proportioned so that it can be worn loosely, wrapped around the neck or styled as a luxurious stole.
The variations created by hand dyeing and hand weaving mean that Psychedelic is truly one of a kind.
